ANDREA GILLIGAN WINS INAUGURAL HEADLINE STUDENT MEDIA AWARD

Andrea Gilligan, a journalism student from NUI Galway, has won the Headline Student Media award for journalism relating to mental health or suicide prevention. The award was presented by Geoff Day, Head of the HSE’s National Office for Suicide Prevention at the National Student Media Awards, which were held in Dublin 15th April 08. To listen to the winning entry please click : https://headline.ie/podcasts/2008/may/20/long-day-over/
The award was judged by Carl O’Brien the social affairs correspondent with the Irish Times. The award is a new category in the 3 Smedias – The National Student Media awards this year. The category was sponsored by Headline in association with the HSE’s National Office for Suicide Prevention. 
Andrea, from Ballyshannon, Co. Donegal, won the award for ‘The Long Day is Over’, a powerful radio documentary about suicide and depression. Carl O’Brien, Social Affairs correspondent with the Irish Times judged the category. He said, “The overall standard of entries was very high and helped aid public understanding of mental health and suicide prevention. Andrea’s documentary was a powerful first-hand testimony from individuals and family members which helps debunk many of the myths about suicide.”
