Laois shortlisted for Central Mental Hospital

Laois has been examined as a possible location for the new Central Mental Hospital following the shelving of the controversial Thornton Hall site in Dublin. The site in Portlaoise is one of three locations – along with Dublin and Louth – which is believed to have been examined as a possible location for the new national facility.

Two-thirds of workers would hide their mental illness from colleagues and employers, campaigners have claimed. Startling figures from the Association for Higher Education Access and Disability (Ahead) also showed one-third of employees would not feel comfortable working with someone who had depression or an anxiety disorder.

With more than 400,000 people in Ireland experiencing depression at any one time, Depression Awareness Week (DAWN) aims to reduce the stigma and raise awareness of the illness. Launched yesterday, the DAWN campaign hopes to create greater public awareness about the support information and education services offered by the depression support group Aware.
